Benefits of Ayat al Kursi for Muslim Children
Children are like wet clay, they can be very easily moulded into what the parents want. They are like sponges, soaking up knowledge like water. They will mirror whatever traits, habits, and morals we teach them from a very young age. Teach them the love of Islam and they will turn out to be righteous slaves of Allah. Teach them negligence towards religion (by your own inactions) and they will be distant from their Creator.
As parents, it is our responsibility to teach them the former. The more we teach them, the better people they will grow up to be and contribute to a better world. The better we teach them, the more rewards they will bring us in the Hereafter. Among the basics of Tarbiya is to teach our children Ayat al-Kursi (The Verse of The Throne). People often ask, “what are the benefits of Ayat al-Kursi for Muslim children”.
Verse 255 of Surah al-Baqarah (chapter: The Cow) in the holy Qu’ran is called Ayat al-Kursi.
The meaning of Ayat al-Kursi is:
"Allah - there is no deity worthy of worship except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence. Neither drowsiness nor sleep befalls Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who could possibly intercede with Him without His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they know not a thing except for what He wills for them to know. His Kursi extends over the Heavens and the Earth and He is not exhausted by preserving them. And He is the Most High (in status), the Most Great."
Let’s take a look at the reasons which make Ayat al-Kursiy special and important.
What makes the Ayat al-Kursi special?
The following Hadith are proof that Ayat al-Kursi holds a special place in Islam and should be taught to children at an early age.
Ubayy Ibn Ka^b reported,
“The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, ‘Abu Mundhir! Do you know which ayah in Allah’s Book is the greatest?’ I said, ‘Allah and His Messenger know best.’ He again asked, ‘Do you know which ayah in Allah’s Book, according to you, is the greatest?’ I (Abu Mundhir) replied, ‘it is ‘allahu la ilaha illa huwal-hayyul-qayyum’’. Thereupon he patted me on the chest and said, ‘rejoice by your knowledge, O Abu Mundhir!” (i.e, may this knowledge be a source of respect, honour and benefit to you)”.
[Sahih Muslim]
Abu Hurayrah reported,
The Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “in Surah al-Baqarah there is a verse which is the best of all the verses of the Qur’an. It is never recited in a house except that the Shaytan leaves. It is ayat al-Kursi”.
[Sahih Muslim]
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said,
Everything has its pinnacle and the pinnacle of the Qur’an is Surah al-Baqarah. In it there is an ayah which is the greatest in the Qur’an. It is ayat al-Kursi.
[at-Tirmidhiyy]
Ubayy ibn Ka^b said,
I had a conversation with a non-muslim Jinn and asked him, “what will protect
us from you?” He said, “this ayah, ayat al-Kursi.”
Then the next day Ubayy went to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and told him about what had happened, and he said, “the evil one spoke the truth”.
Abu Umamah reported,
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “whoever reads ayat al-kursi after every obligatory prayer, after he dies, his soul will ascend to the ^arsh (the ceiling of Paradise) and then return.
[an-Nasa'iyy, Ibn Hibban - Sahih]
What are the benefits of reading the Ayat al-Kursi?
- Children are born with a natural curiosity. Ayat al-Kursi will answer their basic questions about Allah i.e. Who is Allah, what are the attributes of Allah.
-
Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi at bedtime, Allah will appoint an angel to protect them until the morning. This will allow children sleep in peace, knowing that nothing will harm them insha'Allah, therefore there is nothing to be afraid of.
- Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi in the morning will be protect until the evening. Whoever recites it in the evening will be protected until the morning.
-
When you recite it after their Fard prayers, nothing will come between them and Jannah after death, as per the hadith of Prophet Muhammad
- It will protect you from the evil Jinn.
- It will protect you from the evil eye/nazr/^ayn.
- When you recite it, the Shaytan will flee.
- If you teach your children it, whenever they recite it, you will earn rewards – even if this is after you have passed away. A good form of Sadaqah Jariyah!
